OMTP have launched a competition to design the best BONDI widget for demonstration at the GSMA Mobile World Congress. The competition is open from the 8th January until the 8th February inclusive.
The aim of the competition is simple. Developers are requested to create the best example of a BONDI widget which can then be demonstrated on multiple BONDI supporting devices during the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona. The winners of the competition will be announced on the first day of the event.
To assist you in creating your widgets, OMTP have a number of tools, tutorials and examples to assist you. If you have difficulty, you may also use the competition support area to post your problems and we will attempt to resolve your issues as quickly as possible.
The first prize is USD5000, payable to the creator of the best overall widget. A number of handset prizes are also available including several Android and Windows Mobile based devices.
The full terms and conditions of the competition are contained here.
To Get Started
1 Register
The first thing to do if you wish to enter is to register onto the BONDI developer site. Here you will get a login and password and you will then be able to have access to a competition support site where you can post any problems you encounter. A FAQ will be updated during the competion to keep you up to date with any common problems or issues you may be encountering.
2 Learn
Take a look at some basic tutorials and at a couple of example widgets. You can see how simple their construction is and how easy it is to create them.
3 Create your widget
Use whatever tools suit you to create your widget. Your widget can be as simple as one which sends a text message with a single page or it can have multiple linked pages and different services.
You don't need to use any more than a text editor, an image tool and something to create a zip package in order to create a fully functional BONDI widget. Try it, just by unzipping an example widget and looking at the files used.
You might want to use an SDK. In which case look here to find out some examples.
4 Test your widget
In order to test your widget you will need to install it onto a Windows Mobile 6.x device which has been installed with the BONDI Reference Implentation (RI). If you have a suitable device, download the RI (a cab file), and install it onto your device (see tutorial). The RI comes with some pre-installed widgets and you can upload yours to the phone either from a PC or from the Internet (using the menu).
If you do not have a suitable device, you may wish to use the Perfecto Mobile Handset Cloud service. This enables you to test your widgets on a variety of real mobile handsets over the web. Using the Perfecto Mobile service, you can remotely access and control a selection of Windows Mobile based devices that have been set up with the BONDI Reference Implementation. You can easily upload and install your widget on these devices, and test that it works properly and displays correctly on a variety of devices with different screen sizes. Get more information about how to install your widget on real devices.
